WOW.

In days of old, I thought I was a bad golfer. Inexperience was the cause, but still, bad. I got better, but here I am again. I played the worst game of golf I've ever seen played today. I got a 61 on a 36. That's difficult to admit to..

Checking a ruling here.. if you're hitting a provisional (and you end up playing it) is it stroke 2 off the tee, because you already hit your original, or is it 3 because it's considered a drop? So if you were playing your provisional, your 2nd real shot would be stroke 3 or stroke 4?

Because I ate a lot of 3-stroke-provisionals. Let me tell you.. probably 3, at least. So that's nearly 10 strokes.

Second hole, I was in some heavy rough, so I clubbed up a bit. Never hit a ball so clean in my life.. still, was only like 20-30 yards over the green, and she was in play. Duffed a lob wedge. Yay. Duffed a lob wedge AGAIN!! Seriously, I wanted to drop my clubs and walk into the pond.

The greens were atrociously difficult today, too. They were SO fast. I hit a 6 iron on the last hole that was rolling by the time it got to the green, and rolled clear over it. Gosh..

So, considering I'd be home later than 7pm every night, I don't have any time in school to do homework, and I couldn't work because of this so-fun-game, maybe I should quit. I was considering it anyway, but this is really a show stopper. The first time I played in march I shot a 57. THE FIRST TIME I PLAYED!!

A message from God maybe?

Oh yeah, and I just remembered this.

Par 3, I think it was 169 or so. I was on in 1.

Double bogey.

4-putt. 4!! WHAT THE ****!! I'm not the best golfer, and I'm only good sometimes.. but a 4-putt?!?!?! I wish I had someone else to blame for this..

There are several "quirks" to the provisional rule.

1. NEVER hit provisional if you see your ball go into a hazard (red/yellow stakes) They are not a stroke and distance penalty. Take your club length from POE and get the feck out of dodge. IF you hit a ball into a hazard and play provisional it is automatic 3 off the tee, you must play your provisional

2. If you hit your tee shot into an unmarked area and fear it lost, you can hit a provisional ball (you will lie 3 when it lands). You can play the provisional up to your original ball. This is where it gets a little confusing... this means if your provisional lands behind your first ball you can hit it without penalty EVEN if you find your original tee shot afterwards and decide to play it... this doesn't happen very often, since most people will search for their original tee-ball before hitting their provisional where it lies.

3. A ball hit OB white stakes is an automatic 3 off the tee - no provisional. Just keep reloading until you put one in play. If you go down and find that your tee shot is actually not OB you can play it as long as you declared your provisional drive as a provisional.

Sorry to make this sound more confusing that it actually is... (I am a little unclear on some of the rules also) but to answer your original question the answer is stroke number 2 is the act of you reteeing (just like a drop from a hazard)

Every once in awhile, I feel the way you did. I've played 4 or 5 holes and walked off the course because I just couldn't find a swing that would actually carry the ball more than 80 yards. I've stopped keeping score like I did yesterday, and just kept playin'. Probably lost 5 balls yesterday. I hate that.

DON'T GIVE UP THOUGH!! Eventually we will beat this game or die tryin!

25 over on 9 holes.. I shot 6 over on that exact 9 holes (albeit the greens were HORRIFYING today.. one kid said one of the pin locations was non-conforming. He was a douche) which makes it extra bad. I was 16 strokes worse today for reasons I can't identify. Ugh..

Okay guy, here's the main thing to remember.

YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR 6 MONTHS.

I've only been playing for 3 and a half years and have bizarro days semi regularly. I recognize that this is a game of intense skill and immense amounts of practice are required OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME to *maintain* a high level of play.

Should I have quit because I shot 110 (admittedly at a tough but reasonable course) on Friday? Or should I have played on Saturday at shot 93 (42/51)? Especially when two weeks prior I shot 85 when I missed a 4 footer for 84 on the final hole?

You've only just begun. Welcome to golf.

this means if your provisional lands behind your first ball you can hit it without penalty EVEN if you find your original tee shot afterwards and decide to play it...

you mean as well as a 1 shot penalty for a lost ball?

Well, I shot a 46 today on a course I've never played.. interesting, too.

+4, par, par, par, par, par, bogey, +4, par.

I had a bad headache after the first hole too, so I wasn't thinking much. Seemed to work real well. toward the end we were rushing because it somehow took us 2 hours to get to hole 7

Hence that +4...

On the last hole I punched a 5 iron from abour 20 feet out under some ropes and hit the pin, left an 8 inch putt. Yay.

Another awesome thing.. I hit about 240 off the tee with my 3 wood on a par 4, left 190 to the green, slugged my 4 iron. Piiiing. Hit the pin and rolled 'round the cup. Was a fairly long shot left, but it was a solid 2 putt.
