I just recently graduated High School and have been playing for about 8 years. I didn't take golf that serious until my senior year. Having waited that long I really didn't get to expose my name to colleges. Therefore I am attending a community college hoping I can maybe make it into a college or onto the nike tour or whatever they call it now days. I am looking to maybe go to try and get to where I can start making some money. What I want to know from you guys that have this experience, what it takes. I practice as much as possible and play. I have my good days and I have my bad ones. Someone let me know how hard it is to try and start a professsion? Be honest if I have no chance tell me, I figure if I build up enough confidence I can try my dream.

Anything's possible, but it's probably unlikely. On a random par 72 course, what would you expect yourself to shoot? There's a college in North Carolina I think that actually teaches golf. If you're really serious, look into that.

Your chances at a NCAA scholarship now are zero. Your best bet is to pick a good division II or III school and try and make their team as a walk on. Gain your experience that way, plus earn a college degree.

I know that my goal is to go to school and get a good education, so that I can have something later on in life. I know the dream of going to a D 1 school and playing is out of the question. I just hope that maybe I could play in a few tournaments and just try if nothing else. If it's meant to be it will happen. Thanks for the input.

It'll be a rewarding experience just to try your best and go for it, regardless of how it turns out. And do it now while your lower expenses and responsiblities make it possible. Whether you end up earning $1 or $1m, you'll be gaining valuable experience that will help you in the workplace later. Sounds like a good plan to get that education for later too ;).

Worst thin you can do is try your best to make it and if you dont get there then you cant every look back when your older and say "Well I shoulda tried!". This is why Im going to try to at least qualify for a few Nationwide Tour events over the next couple years. I will either make it and do well or I wont but when Im older I wont be able to do the coulda woulda shoulda. If you TRULY TRULY love the game of golf go for it.

Before you shell out your money to monday qualify on the Nationwide (2000$), try some of the mini tours first, like hooters or golden bear or whatever.
Or go to Q-school.
There's a lot of competition and many are very very good.

I have just recently been informed of the hooters tour, and Im sure Q-school is tough enough. But how much does it cost to play on mini tours? I know that isnt cheap either.

Sounds like you will be too late for this season then, if you're attending a CC now. I'd start researching schools now (D2 and D3 that will allow you the best opportunities to make their squads - sorry no $$$ for D2 and D3 for athletics)

You will gain valuable experience and perhaps then you can look at the mini tours or other high profile amateur events when you're finished school

If you're handicap is 3 or 4 or lower, then you may want to join some mini tours or local tours and see how you do. If not, stay in school and get your education. If you can not win your Club Championship, then just think of many better players there are out there. BTW, the Nike Tour is now the Nationwide Tour :)

He will need to get to +3 or +4 before thinking about mini tours.

On average look to spend $2000 per event. That includes travel, tourney fee and food.

If you can walk on a d2-3 school they pay all the fees. IMO that is the best way to go.
