Honestly, nike golf would be nowhere without him. Everyone thinks "tiger's the best, he plays nikes, so i should too". Thats the only reason why anyone would buy an athletic shoe company's clubs

Does Gatorade make you score 50 points a game for the Bulls?

Do you think that Chunky Soup makes Donvan McNabb the player that he is?

How much does Viagra help Rafael Palmerio's game?

It's called advertising. You try and get the best player/spokesman to front your equipment.

Tiger was THE next phenom coming out of college. Nike jumped on him. But so did American Express, Rolex, ect. So, do people buy Rolex's because Tiger wears one? Sure.

It's all about image. Nothing new.

I think Tiger has helped Nike's golf image in a huge way. They were virtually off radar before he signed with them...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Nike didn't even make golf clubs prior to TW, Did they???

I thought they just made golf balls and after signing Woods started in on the market. I believe he played Titleist and seemed to win quite a bit more prior to Nike Making Clubs.

I guess another valid question would be "Where would Tiger be without Nike?"

i wasn't taking what i learned in history class to the table, rock. That deal was a 5 year deal when woods was 21. That makes it til he's 26. He's turning 30 at the end of December. So Rolex is old news, Tag Heuer is the shiz

Splitting hairs, but the original post was about Tiger and his start with Nike. I'm pretty sure that happened more than 5 years ago.

Oh wait....how long was he playing Cobra and Titleist before he changed over?:D

Anyways, Tag, Rolex, same shit, different pile.

What about the piss? ;)

On the Nike front though, they excel in almost everything they put their hand to, or they bail, real quick. They can attract and do employ the best; designers, engineers, marketeers, etc. and they pay top $$$ for them. They also were clever to sign Woods for $40m which at the time was unprecedented, because they saw the gravy train possibilities, not only within their golf division, but also to enhance their brand.

And what's more, they will only get better as Woods gets better. They also have signed up a whole rake of other greats in their stable. Sure they have had to work extra hard to get better, but they are getting better, of that I have no doubt. They have redeveloped their clubs, each line getting progressively better.

How many other companies can command their market share in such a short space of time? Watch them grow. And I am not just talking about their sticks. Look at the apparel division; who doesn't own something Nike?

And I say all this having only played their balls and some Nike clones. But I have Nike shoes, a Nike hat etc. I am not a Nike fan, nor a Tiger fan, but I do recognise good marketing, clever business acumen and a massive brand that Fortune and Adidas would love. I'll give that to Phil Knight.

And shame on those who dis the company!

I think that They both have helped each other out. I dont play them but Nike balls are preaty good or so it seams. Tiger clams that his contract says that he can play what ever equipment he wants, if thats true isnt it fair to think he would.

Wasn't aware of that. That makes it rather interesting.

I would think he would simply because when he had the Titleist contract, he used a ping Putter grip and scratched out the White Ping name.
