This past few weeks, the bag has taken on a little different look. I've totally dropped the driver. The Mini is just as long and more consistent. And, I've been playing the Eye 2's pretty well.

Mini 1.5 set at 14 degrees
Callaway Big Bertha fairway set at 18 degrees
Callaway Big Bertha 3h
Callaway Big Bertha 4h
Ping Eye 2 SST 5-PW
Ping Eye 2+ SST SW
Odyssey Red 7s putter

I think that's 11 clubs... the fewest I've had in the bag for a while.

I've come to the conclusion that I much prefer 10 clubs over 14.
A 10 club set I can totally behind. I think my wife currently carries 8 or 9 at the moment?!?! She doesn’t play a lot these days, but when she does I’d say she might even have MORE fun with the fewer clubs. I think a lot of the guess work is taken out for her, she doesn’t have to ask me what to hit, she looks, grabs one and goes. And I couldn’t ask for anything more!

I think it is 100% a case of different strokes for different folks, pardon the awful pun. But I think its clear, what works for one, may not work for another. There was actually some buzz created when some one noted Nelly Korda does not carry a 5i...

Interesting... I’m more curious than anything and just to continue the conversation. Could there have been a reason she didn’t have one at the PNC??

I won’t bother with trying to be accurate with dates and times, I’m just posting this more to start a general discussion and to bounce ideas off one another. Yes, I do realize this is dangerous! LOL

As mentioned in another thread, I played my first round of 2021 on Sunday. Didn’t play the best, but it was fun just being out there swinging clubs. Most notably, I did so carrying just 10 clubs. As you can see in my signature, my ‘normal’ set is comprised of the 14 club max, as I know most golfers sets are. But why?? It wasn’t until the 50’s or 60’s when a limit on clubs was even put in place. Hogan would carry 19 clubs or something crazy like that. Moe Norman had a car full of equipment!

The set I used on Sunday was comprised of a; D, 5w, 5, 7, 9, W, 52, 56, 60, P. I loaded up on short irons, perhaps for obvious reasons, the short game scores! Truthfully I could have played probably without one or two more clubs, but I did call on each and every single one I had. I also didn’t miss any of the clubs that I didn’t have. That’s probably the part that most surprised me. I was never in between clubs, it was pretty obvious when I looked at the yardage what club I was using. There are two shots in particular from the round that stick out in my mind, that further add to my question of why 14 clubs?? The 3rd hole was a tight drive par 4, I knew immediately driver was not the club, had my 3w been in the bag, I would’ve hit it. Knowing full well that club and I don’t get along the best... instead I hit a beautiful 5w landing just inside 150. The second was on the par 3 7th, had 144 to the hole, a full 8i all day long. But a full 8 carries a larger chance of error, for me at least. Instead I gripped down on my 7i took a much more controlled swing and flew the ball 144.5 yds just right of the hole. Chipped in for birdie from there! This game is hard enough as it is, I’m starting to think carrying less clubs makes it a little easier?!?!
I'm not exactly sure how fewer clubs would be more fun or easier.
I'm not arguing that it wouldn't.
I just don't intuitively understand why it might be.

Since cart bag manufacturers have flaunted the fourteen club rule with many fifteen slot bags--
fourteen individual full length dividers PLUS a discreet putter well---
none of them for an umbrella since there's also an umbrella sleeve---
I've been advocating for a SEVENTEEN club bag.

It would be easy: 4 x 4 plus the putter well.

Then I could carry the complete set at once.

1, 3, 5, 7-woods
2, 3, 4 utility long irons
5-GW iron set
56-08, 60-04 wedges
putter.

Seventeen clubs. The whole set that one paid for at once.

I would think,
if they feel that fifteen clubs are OK,
that 17 would be a more natural number.

Thoughts?

Either playing short courses or an artist with his short game. Maybe can't hit a fairway wood or an iron longer than his 6-iron. Lots of folks, today, are playing hybrids down through their 5-iron. I just think he's got entirely too much gap between driver and 6-iron to be effective on most course layouts.

Yes, that’s him! It was the digit rather than word, my bad. It’s a cool setup, but again think the lofts would need predetermined to make it work

If carrying 17 clubs makes you happy and lets you enjoy playing the game, then do it!! I am not going to stop you and really can’t, I just don’t have that kind of free time. LOL It is very conspicuous that bag manufacturers are making 15 slots the common place. Especially in the cart bag market! I guess maybe the real question is maybe; why was the club limit put in place then?? Is this another one of those rules that really shouldn’t apply to us recreational hacks?!?!

Speaking for myself though, at 38 and in somewhat decent health. Carrying my stand bag, plus 14 clubs, plus a bottle of water, plus some snacks, plus balls, tees, plus, plus... for 18 holes is tiring. I tend to feel it after a round in my neck and shoulders. I would say its much more than a ‘normal’ amount of discomfort. And while I do enjoy the walk much more than riding in cart, it meant finding a more comfortable alternative for me to do so. Enter the SunMountain push cart! My cart was likely one of my best golf purchases ever and scoring a second for my better half was a major bonus! During the Canadian golf season however there is one small problem with our carts, when its too wet!! This usually occurs early in the spring and late in the fall. My wife never wants to play at these times anyway, but of course I’m trying to still get out there. So I hatched this whacky idea of carrying fewer clubs in an ultra, ultra lightweight bag with just the “essentials.”

I just haven’t figured out exactly what those essentials are...

"At 38..." A strapping young lad like you should be able to lug a cart bag around on your shoulder!! Why, when I was your age I walked 36 holes/day, all uphill, carrying 17 clubs in a leather bag with 5 dozen balls!!! C'mon! You're half my age!! :>)

Essentials?? Snacks. Balls. Tees. If you play as early as we do, you're done before lunch time so why the snacks?? Balls? Shouldn't need more than two or three if you hit it straight!! Tees? Just bang the driver into the tee box and build a dirt mount you can set your ball on. Sheesh! Ain't yet figured out this younger generation!!! 😁 😁
