Been working on making some surfboards. I will be making 4 boards before spring. 2 for my kids and 2 for me. This first one is for my 10 year old son. Photos are in order of the process so you can get an idea of what's involved. Takes me about a week to produce a finished board.

After adding a finish coat and sanding you end up with three stoked groms.

I'm just a hobbyist. I get professional results but there is no way I would want to do it for a living. These things are very labor intensive and you are dealing with alot of toxic chemicals. The $200 profit per board I could make selling them just wouldn't make sence.

Hell yes there is surf here. I have spent many hours out on lake Michigan aboard my jetskis & it can get hairy out there. Spent some time on a wind surfer as well, didn't care for that though.

Nice work Fisher, make sure to show us the 100% completed project.

Finished Product.
Last night I put the finish coat on the deck. All that's left now is to sand the fins and tape line then a final wet sand out to 400 grit and this one is done. Already thinking about the next board.

Overall this board came out about as close to a professionally made board as a backyarder like myself is capable. The only area where my tools and skills are lacking is with the sanding. I don't have the proper tools for getting a professional sanding and polish.

Winter Board #2

Old & New

I'm working on a copy of my all-time favorite board. I purchased this Natural Art back in 1989 and rode it till it began to fall apart. This fall I pulled it out from under the house one day and took it out for the first time in over 10 years. Ended up riding nothing else ever since. Had so much fun on it that I absolutely had to try to reproduce it.

After 2.5 hours in the dungeon tonight I wrapped up shaping this board. For whatever reason this board fought me every step of the way. Its alot easier to make an original board than it is to copy an existing board.

The nose really fought me to get it right. The original board had a little less nose rocker than the blank I am working with so it was very difficult to persuade the new board to accept the flatter nose rocker and get everything to flow. Spent about an hour and a half on the nose of this board before I was satisfied.

This one is ready for paint and I will be glassing it this weekend.

Painted and almost ready for glass. Just need to seal the paint after it dries and mark out for my fin boxes.

I enjoyed this thread Fisher. It must be difficult being an avid golfer & surfer this time of year in North America. In my neck of the woods, we golf 365 & autumn, winter & spring are the best times for golf.

This shot is of the board after I finished laminateing. I will be hot coating in a few minutes. Second side hotcoat will go on around 9:00 tonight. Tomorrow I will be doing fin boxes and leash plug. Monday evening, sand and polish.
