Shaft Questions

So I've never really knew what to look for in shafts. I mean I know the basics like Shaft flex, Weight, and Length but beyond that I'm clueless.

Currently, The Trajectories on my Driver and 3 wood are very low. Im either hitting low fades, or just hitting low pulls to the right with no hook action on it (I'm a lefty). Im looking at the Grafalloy Pro Launch 65 shaft (link shown below) but would like to know what I should be looking at as far as the shaft specifications.

Tourque:
I know the higher the Tourque the higher your Trajectory, but what is considered high and what is considered low. Is 5.0 the highest?

Weight:
What is the standard weight for Driver Shafts?

Tip:
According to the link, the Tip is .350". I believe this has something to do with the kick point, and I know the Lower the kick point, the higher the launch angle, but what number would be considered a Tip Soft or a Tip Stiff.

Butt:
According to the link the Butt is .600". I'm not sure what this is either.

Length:
Whats is the standard length of a Driver Shaft?

My game is consitently in the 80's with strong iron play, inconsistency off the tee (hopefully new shafts can help), and a slowly improving short game. I think these changes can help me significantly.


Any help is much appreciated.

I don't think torque effects trajectory.
I would say 60- 70 grams is probably normal for driver shaft, but you can get them as light as 45 grams and as heavy as 110.
.350 is the size of the shaft tip. You need to find out the size your driver takes.
.600 is the size of the butt of the shaft, you will find a grip based on this size.
I would say 45" is about the normal length for most, but 43-46" is not unheard of.
 
Torque doesnt effect trajectory, infact the differences in torque of modern shafts mean that you wont be able to tell the difference.

Torque has nothing to do with trajectory. According to our ace clubmaker in here it will just be noticed in "feel" and only by better players. It has to do with "twisting" of the head and was a concern in the early graphite shafts but no longer an issue.

The ProLaunch Blue is a "low kick", "high launch" shaft. Probably the highest launching shaft I know of but the shaft won't make a huge amount of difference, it's the launch angle on the clubhead. (High kick = lower launch, mid-kick = mid launch, low kick = high launch).

No standard weight. Whatever the OEM decides to put in his driver. Some are down to 50g and some are up to 75g.

There are .335 tip sizes and .350 tip sizes. You can use a .335 with a head .350 by using an adapter but you can't put a .350 shaft in a .335 head. It has nothing to do with the kickpoint. (Diameter of the shaft tip and "hole" in the driver head for the shaft).

Butt size is just the diameter where the grip goes on. .600 is pretty standard.

Standard length is usually 45". used to be 43". Now some makers (Wilson) are going up to 46-1/2". Longer might give a little more distance but harder to control.

Shaft flex. If you know your swingspeed there are charts for each shaft on what flex should work but that's with a smooth swing. If you come at it hard you might have to go a flex stiffer.
 
So from what you guys are telling me, the only specs I should really be looking at just for Trajectory, is the kick/bend point. I can use the weight and length to my comfort level, and the others are mainly for club making purposes. Am I correct in saying this.

Youi didn't mention what your driver and 3w face angle is. If you have an 8-1/2* loft on your driver and you start spending $$$ on shafts you just maybe waisting your cash.

I have a 9.5 degree loft on my driver, 15 degree lofted 3 wood. My clubhead speed ranges from 90-95 mph. that brings up another question. With that type of clubhead speed would I be better off using a regular flex shaft?

You will be hard pressed to get good results with any shaft in a 9.5-deg head with a 90-95 mph swing speed. You should have a 10.5 minimum, maybe even a 12-deg. head. I swing 90-95 mph, and fit right in the regular-flex range of most manufacturers. But...

THERE IS NO STANDARD FLEX DESIGNATION !!! One makers regular is another's stiff. Annoying as hell.
 
I totally agree, they should make a Standard Flex designation. Would make things a hell of a lot easier.

Not necessarily true. I have a 95-105 swing speed (slower at start and higher after warming up). On the launch monitor the 9º gave me the perfect 14º launch angle (which gave me the longest carry). All depends on the individual. Someone at work with a 110 swing speed uses a 7º since he hits it so high otherwise. And he puts them out 300+ frequently. I know Wishon preaches this (higher loft for slower swings) but everyone's swing is different.

Your swing would normally call for a regular flex unless you are very aggressive. And like Eracer said, every company's flex ratings are different if you base it on CPM's and DSFI :)
