Let's see, I remember working with Windows1.0 and then down the line 3.0 and 3.1
I then remember
4) Windows 95
5) Windows 98
6) Windows 2000/ME
7) Windows XP
8) Windows Vista

So where the heck does 7 come from?? Lucky Number???

Maybe I should go back to the copy of 1.0 on the 5.25" floppies that I still have in my basement.

Things that make you go Hmmm. Is this their way of saying that Vista was a mistake and they are going back to a revised XP?

Kinda funny because I am probably one of the very few that doesn't have a problem with Vista. Because while it crashes quite a bit, from a productivity stand point it does a fantastic job restoring the session and I would rather spend 2-3 times a day waiting 5 seconds for a session to restore as opposed to 5 minutes having to reboot the system each time.

Again, things that make you go Hmmmm.

Well.. I think 3.1 or whatever it was, was the first real "windows" that people used. Point and click and such.

Sooo...

1. Win 3.1
2. Win 95
3. Win 98
4. Win 2000/ME
5. XP
6. Vista
7. 7

:shark:

So you are saying I am dating myself with Windows 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1.

Just surprises me that Microsoft forgot or ignored their past, even if 1.0 would be lucky to load Windows and 1 application on an 8086 with the Math co-processor. :D

... or better yet, the 2.0 that would use the 128k of expanded memory I had for a total of 768k. I think I paid an extra $200 to go from a 20mb HD to a 30 MB HD.

Has Microsoft forgot it's culture. ;)

lol..... I've personally never seen 1. or 2. Just DOS then 3.

I still have a copy of 1.0 in my basement that was from my actual computer and labeled under Zenith at the time. Even though my computer was not a Zenith. Which was one of the top "IBM Compatible" computers at the time. I think their main competitor at the time was Amiga prior to the original Mac's.

edit 1 - Then again, I learned to program on a Commodore Pet and used to set up my class for after lunch so I could use the lunch hour to load up my program on the tape drive. The Commodore 64 with the disk drive was a hugh step up.

BTW, I think Commodore bought out Amiga.

I'd prefer an OS with fewer bells & whistles. It'd be faster, easier to set up and less prone to bugs. They seem to have forgotten the KISS principle.

KISS - Keep it simple, stupid.

I really think people should give a shot to Windows Vista because its such an AWESOME and FAST software package and has enver crashed on me....Oh, no, wait, I use Mac OX:shocked:

OK, never mind the comment....

I still think Win98SE was their last all around decent operating system. I actually think that was where they should have set the bar. Unfortunately they seem to being play Limbo ever since. Seems they have all but abandoned the Vista concept before they even made an effort to work out the bugs. Kinda like ME, which ended up being the atrocious operating system in all history. Where the business application for 2000 was not bad.

It actually seems that 7 is simply Vista with the addition of a few things that anyone could set up on Vista with a bit of either Knowhow or Freeware. I have always actual defended Microsoft strategy up to this point (or maybe up until a few year ago), but they seem to be losing their edge.

Not only do I think Win98SE was likely a superior operating system, but after having used Office 2007 now for several months, while they have a few nice features over my prior version of Office 2000, I think what you mention applies to it as well. I just am not sure I really see them having made it better. It is a business application that once it is set up properly makes for a very powerful tool, they tried to simplify it for the every day crowd and in the process they seemed to have made it less powerful as a business application. Personally I think from an IT standpoint 2000 was a better application, and had it not been for finally running into compatibility issues due to it's shelf life, I probably would not have changed. Kinda seemed like say "Well we have Works for the everyday public, and Office for Business, although we can't sell Works for as much, so why not make Office simple to use for the every day public" In the process they seemed to have made it more difficult to navigate for the Business user that can gain the full advantage. There is just a different toolset required for business, and now you have to hunt for them and customize the system to make them accessible.

When you really get down to it XP Professional is the ultimate operating system. With that there was nothing else needed. Now all they are doing is adding fluff.

UNIX has been around since 1969, and I have worked with it for probably 1/2 that time. It only took Mac 25 years to figure out they need a better system and instilled that into Leopard. It is to young to really say that it will work for them. If they utilize the system properly it could likely make for a powerful system. If however they utilize the system like they did Mac OS, they will likely go no further than they have up to now.

Simply put, if they do not prove to have a good product, it is system like Linux that they will loose their share too. Which at this point I would be more likely to trust. Up to know it is quite apparent they have made the wrong decision to gain application support and have based their entire strategy on being able to support application that will run on Windows. Hopefully Leopard is not just a matter of having a good concept but not advancing the idea any further.

The fact that a system doesn't crash means very little if you cannot use it to run a business or have the application support that you require. Without that it is simply a toy that does not crash. I can say the same about the operating system on my XBOX360, however I wouldn't try to use it to run my business.

Leopard is actually the first time I actually think Apple took a step in the right direction since their inception when they mainly marketed towards Engineering. If they utilize what is a very capable business system in UNIX, they may finally be onto something. However 6 month use on a system that has been around for 30 years does not make for a great system. They need to do more that dig up a 30 year old system and say it doesn't crash. I am interested to see what they do with this, because it is seriously the first system they have put out a system since the mid 80's that I did not simply view as an expensive toy, or suitable for a possible home business, or upper management that grew up before the computer age and could not see the different but was attracted to a shiny object.

M$ Windows XP Pro is a their best system to date. I did not like the Vista previews. :)

Windows 7 is just a codename. i doubt if that will be the release name. Vista was called "LongHorn" almost right up to release date.

(although i think Windows 7 is a catchy name).

From what I've heard, 7 will be more basic with alot of content available online.
Microsoft are trying to grab a bigger share of online business away from google.

Windows 7 is the real name. From previews, it's basically Vista with some stuff cleaned up.

I have XP and Vista on two machines. XP is solid as all hell, and Vista stinks. WHy do I have to click 4 times to do the same thing I did in XP?

I f*cking hate it.
