The really dumb thing about this is:

I want to know how far it is to the green (not how clever the superintendant 'thinks' he is,) so that I can choose the club that will get my 2nd shot to the 100 yard marker.

In my experience this is usually on a long par 5 where a person still has 275+ to the green after hitting their 220 "bombed" driver off the tee.

Wish that were the case. It's more like a short 380 yard par 4, and you don't see shit. Maybe a buried sprinkler head with nothing on it.
