The return of Tiger (Again!)

I don't know..........I was kind of glad to see him back playing. I want to see how he holds up against some of this new talent out there. He's done a hell of a lot for the game of golf. Hate to see him just "fade away".

This ^^^^. I hope the guys back is better & he wins a few more tournaments. I don't care about majors, just be a contender & hopefully win a bit. Make all the Tiger haters suck it.

No hate here - just don't want to watch TV coverage of him in 35th place while the cameras are ignoring the leaders.

Noren kind of handed it to him by dunking his 2nd shot on today's playoff hole. But Day did make a nice birdie with a layup 2nd shot. Yesterday's 5 hole playoff was pretty good TV.

Gamesmanship. Use the rules in atypical ways to gain an advantage.

We used to use this technique back when I was bowling semi-competitively. No shot clock, however, if you weren't ready to bowl during your turn you could be given a zero. So...if your opponent is on a hot streak, you start taking twice as long of a pre-shot routine. Get them out of their zone. Some bowlers took offense...mainly the ones that couldn't handle it. Kind of like the golfers that think a slight breeze during their back swing caused them to miss the 4 footer for double.

I won't fault him if he was playing inside the ropes of the rules. I've seen plenty of amateurs take that long waiting for the group on the green 250 yards away to clear so they can hit a worm burner 40 yards. This guy is on the cusp of winning a PGA tournament, on the edge of going for it or laying up on the last hole? That's a huge decision.

No. Stroke play is man vs. course, not man vs. man. Gamesmanship should not be a factor in stroke play. If JB did that for gamesmanship, that's a huge dick move. If JB legit took over 4 minutes to select a club, then that's just poor course management.

And no, it's not against the rules, but neither is screaming in a player's backswing but you don't see pros doing that for the same reason. Dick move.

I get that side of it as well. We'll never know if he did it on purpose or if he truly was undecided. But laying up suggests to me that he did it on purpose.

If stroke play were truly man vs course, everyone that beat par would win. You're actively trying to have the best score of all the golfers, which means, if another golfer shoots poorly, it directly affects your position. So, in my opinion, that's not a valid argument here.

As for yelling during another golfers back swing being legal...this is from the USGA Rules -
Meaning of "Serious Breach of Etiquette"
Q.In Rule 33-7, what is meant by a "serious breach of etiquette"?

A.A serious breach of etiquette is behavior by a player that shows a significant disregard for an aspect of the Etiquette Section, such as intentionally distracting another player or intentionally offending someone.

Although a Committee may disqualify a player under Rule 33-7 for a single act that it considers to be a serious breach of etiquette, in most cases it is recommended that such a penalty should be imposed only in the event of a further serious breach.

Ultimately, the application of a penalty for a serious breach of etiquette under Rule 33-7 is at the discretion of the Committee.

Whether or not it's a dick move, well, this is about winning a golf tournament. Competition should be fierce. If you choose to play by your own moral code, that's fine, but that doesn't require others to play by that belief system. If I'm boxing, but I have a moral issue with hitting another man in the face, does that mean the other fighter shouldn't be able to hit me in the face? No.

You (and anyone) can be upset with him, that's fine. However, it is absolutely 100% gamesmanship.

Now, pace of play IS in the etiquette section. However, when making a decision that could be costing you several thousand of dollars...and you're the final group, I don't think 4 minutes is all that excessive. But that's just my opinion. I don't think that would be considered a 'serious' breach, even by a stanch 'be ready to play' golfer.
