Biggest rip off in golf

I don't have to get new grips for quite a while because my set is pretty much brand new. My peeve is the golf glove. Along with cars that run on saltwater, I think that the technology exists to make a golf glove that isn't a useless rag by midway through it's second round. Yes, there is an international cabal controlling the poor endurance of golf grips, but they're only a small piece of the conspiracy. It's the saltwater car and golf glove guys that control the real action.

I would say the plastic spike is the biggest rip off. If you can keep them in your shoe they wear out in 3 rounds.

I'm with ya on this one. My grips and gloves last pretty long but spikes wear out in no time. And why the hell can't somebody invent a spike and tool that actually work together. The last time I did it one of the holders ripped right out of the bottom of the shoe leaving a big hole.

I am a big believer in conspiracies.

JFK was shot by the CIA, the FBI and group of El Savadorean plumbers - all working in tight unison.

And the golf grip, glove and spike industries are all in a tight conspiracy - making us continually buy products that - obviously - could me made to last virtually forever.

It's all about "They".

When you think about it, most things associated with golf are a rip off. Clubs, bags, clothes, hats, balls etc. Stick a brand on something and you can triple the net value of it. Nike have to pay stockholders, so a swoosh pretty much guarantees a massive mark-up. I'm not singling out Nike, but I'll bet a ball pretty much costs 20-30p at most to make, yet one has to fork out over £3 for the pleaseure of whacking it into the woods. (AMF!)

I don't want to open up a can of worms, but I bought a set of Nike Progressive Clones a few years ago. Spec wise they are identical (minus some aesthitics, the swoosh and the name), they were probably made using the same materials, in the same location etc. They were components so I had to make them up myself (shafts, grips etc.) but the overall cost was £140 compared to £600 upwards. They are great clubs.

If you go on-line to places like GolfWorks, you can get great deals on close-outs on grips. Less than £1 per grip in cases. DIY can save you a load of cash and you get the satisfaction of knowing it was done properly.

So for a set of clubs, including tape you will pay ~£20 plus your time, as opposed to £70-£100 for a pro-shop to do it.

If yopu want the brand and the latest and greatest, you will pay top bill. If you shop around, buy 2nd hand, use eBay etc, close-outs etc. then you can beat the system to an extent.

I had Golf Pride Tour Velvets put on my irons. First season I played 135 rounds withthem, next year 165 rounds, same grips. Started this season with them, but switched irons. However the Tour Velvets are still on those other irons. Key here is this.............I cleaned them every 4 rounds with SIMPLE GREEN. Spray it on, scrub the grip with a small bristle brush, rinse them off and air dry them.
Kept them tacky and in good shape. One set of grips, with approx. 340 rounds of golf on them, not bad for $55 Cnd.

Mind you I do not wear them out with a tight grip etc so that helps.

Current set of irons has Golf Pride V55 cord grips, I clean them with Simple Green too, they just take longer to dry than the Tour Velvets did.

You must be buying crappy spikes.
110 rounds this year, 5 spike changes using CHAMP STINGERS. You do the math.
Only once have I had a spike come out of my shoes. Q LOK spikes.

Losing balls? Take lessons, it's cheaper. And throw away the driver.

Spikes suck? Wear a pair of cleats with rubber soles.

Grips wearing? Use tennis racket tape.


Honestly, I expect to change my grips once a year. That's a given for me. Grips are one of the most underrated pieces of equipment in your bag. They seem fickle, but they're important. A good, tacky grip is worth a couple strokes.

Spikes last me at least 50 rounds. I use Black Widows and they're brand new after 25 rounds. The courses around here don't have much for pavement or ashphalt, so they last alot longer. Plus, the middle of the fairway is always soft.

I can't stress this enough, that if you're losing more than a ball a round, then use cheap balls. I will say that cheap balls and more expensive balls do offer the better golfer some help with their game, but someone that's paying 35 bucks for a round, then 20 bucks in beer plus an additional 20 bucks in balls is just a headcase. Not to mention losing spikes, and their grips wearing out....lol.

Buy the cheapest, best name brand balls you can. Hitting Pro V's or Callaway Tours into the bush isn't helping your game. And if you take a box of either, you have two lessons under your belt, pronto.

The math is easy when you're not complaining about everything.....
