I'm looking to buy a new set of irons for my boyfriend. I am looking for some advice on which set I should surprise him with. I know he has been looking at the callaway x-22 and the ping G10. Any advice would be good. He's an average golfer with less than a 20 handicap if that helps.

welcome to shottalk.
I think unless he's using equipment that is really old, switching irons from one off-the-rack set to another off-the-rack set will probably do very little for his game, other than the initial honeymoon period. If he's set on one of those two models, I would definitely go with the pings, but you're probably better off not just giving him a set of clubs. Instead, consider sending him to a place with a competent professional clubfitter who can:
1) ask him questions about his game and common problems he has with his current set
2) review his current bag make-up and make adjustments or suggestions to close yardage gaps (for example, does he often hit his PW 125 yards and his next club only 85 yards leaving a big gap)
3) can watch him hit balls to determine what length, lie angle, and shaft flex and profile will work best with his unique swing (and possibly look for certain swing characteristics/flaws that can be easily compensated for with equipment tweaks)
4) can provide a test club to get the exact swingweight or MOI of the clubs dialed in to best match his swing so he has the best chance at improved consistency and finally,
5) can stand behind the clubs over the years and make adjustments (bending for loft/lie) to ensure they continue to perform for him for as long as he could possibly want to keep this set of clubs

In my opinion, to really do it right (and if you're spending that much money, you might as well), and know he has the right equipment for his game, he needs to be fit.

The "standard" off-the-rack stuff is "fine" for a lot of people, but so is a size 10 medium width shoe

good luck and let us know if we can answer any other questions

I don't think anything else can be added. I will take this opportunity to pad my post count.

Are you available? If so, send pictures... of the clubs!!!!:prop::prop:

I know the joy of watching someone open a present that contained a new set of irons would be great. However, he may have a specific set in mind and should be fitted for his new irons. Would you ever consider a gift certificate? Go to your local golf retailer and get a give certificate that will cover either set. Then, once he opens the GC, you both can go to the store and you can be part of him choosing the set best suited for his game.

Oh! Welcome to ShotTalk!!!!!

One thing I might add, is that you should look at the clubfitting done by PING itself. This is very good, and they stand behind their products 100%. Go to their website, look for clubfitters and make him an appointment.

I second what Doc said.
Skip the Callys and instead of buying him a set of Pings off the rack......set him up with a fitting as the surprise and then just pay for the clubs when he is done.

Indeed! Take him to get fit... not only will he be greatfull... he'll realize all over again how awesome you are because you knew to get him fit instead of buying off the rack!

GEntlemen...you realize what we have here? If she owns a bar, she is quite possibly the perfect woman! Honestly, joining a golf forum to get the perfect gift? Freakin sweet ginger. You and my wife would talk (this would end one of two ways, my wife would convince not to be so nice, or you would convince her to be nicer, both of which are funny and great for me).

Honestly, as said, for a mid-capper, get PING fitting. If he improves a lot or changes his swing, they'll be easy to mold to his new swing, and as much as it irks me to say it, PING makes an incredible club.

I need a girlfriend who thinks I need NEW IRONS for m birthday!!!

Don't you have a sister or something???

Thanks for all the great info guys. I think I'll go with setting him up with a fitting by a Ping guy. I'll just surprise him by bringing him on day out of the blue. I'm flattered by all the attention!

1) I don't own a bar, but I do enjoy a good Stiff drink(Woodford on the Rocks).
