About to step on a snake ....

Yep, that's right. There I was last Saturday at my home course. Near the green on a par 4. I moved to the side of the fairway while my playing partner lined up her approach shot. I was about to step on a 2 to 3 foot 'twig' when all of a sudden it came to life & popped its head up.

I then did a version of "Crouching Tiger, Flying Golfer" & managed to reverse levitate with accompanying unrepeatable commentary.

Said snake disappears. Some golfers waiting at the next tee come over to try & find the snake (still scratching my head about why they would want to). Fugitive snake is found making good its escape by climbing vertically up the trunk of a nearby tree.

Has anyone had a similar experience on a course?

My latest Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom moment came after flying the green on a 135 yd. par 3 hole. There's about 20 yards of grass between the green and a small pond in back, and as I was perusing the grass for my ball, dutifully keeping my head down (the only time I did throughout the entire golf shot,) I managed to stumble within four feet of an alligator that was - shall we say - longer than an easy one-putt. I'm sure the gator was just voicing it's displeasure at having it's daily suntan disturbed by a lumbering idiot; I'm grateful all it did was hiss at me. There was another sound coming from me shortly after that. That sound rhymes with "trapping my ants."

Still, none of that tops my favorite wildlife moment. I was picking blackberries at a friend's house, and as I reached to pluck one, it moved. Turned out to be a plump Black Widow spider. THAT was scary.

Very similar but the twig wasn't a snake.

:biglol:

I saw the tip of either a snake tail or maybe a harmless little lizard last Tuesday. Ran my ball into an island of 5' tall sawgrass (maybe it's a bush, I dunno - Just big round puffs of tall ass grass in random spots on my course.) When I went to get it I heard a rustle and saw the tip of a tail shoot up into the bush. Bye bye B330, I don't need you that bad. Had I seen more of the tail to know it wasn't a venomous snake I would've gone ahead and gotten it.

I had hit my ball into the edge of a pond on my home course. I've seen hundreds of turtles in the water hazards here, but never a snake. Now I'm even with my playing partner on the 17th hole. I check the water depth and decide, I can take my shoes off, roll up my pants and hit the ball from where it lies and avoid the penalty stroke. Off come the shoes, up goes the pants leg and I wade into the water. I'm lining up my shot when my partner starts yelling. I look over my shoulder and see this snake heading towards me, at least 2 1/2 - 3 feet long. Needless to say I scrambled out of the water and took my penalty stroke. Ended up losing by 2 so it didn't really matter anyway.

Then there was the fish burner I hit across the big pond on the par 5. It never got over 2 feet above the water, skipped twice and nailed a big turtle sunbathing on the bank, ricocheted up into the air and back into the water, :faintthud

In Wisconsin we don't have to worry about alligators or poisonous snakes, just snapping turtles. When in NC it was another story.

One good thing about living in the frozen tundra. :D

I saw a huge wild iguana on the teebox in FL. Up here, I've seen snakes while looking for a ball but they are harmless. The coolest thing we have are hawks over at Triggs. I was coming down the hill of a par 5 one day and there was one in a tree with a squirrel, still semi-alive. He was tearing it up and it sounded so nasty. Exactly like ripping a bathtowel. You find squirrel tails all over that course.

Played a course in chico, CA with waaay too many deer just handing around in the shade. They just didnt care. Soo one was right in front of me, and I tried to make noise to shoo it away, it didnt budge. I just hit my 3 wood, missed it by a foot or two and played on.

We have a couple snakes here at the house. I have a Red Tail Boa and a Tiger Reticulated Python.

I was out playing golf once and my wife was with me. On the green was this little baby garter snake. I was trying to hurry it off the green because I figured the group behind me would just kill it. Garter snakes never hurt anyone and they eat bugs and rodents... good snake! Anyway my wife thought she was just going to pick it up and let it go in the brush. I tried to tell her that this snake isn't like ours... it's a WILD animal, views you as a threat, and will defend itself! Does she listen... ooohhh no... :bang: she goes to pick it up and it strikes at her several times lol. Anyway I got it to run off the green to safety with my putter :ugly25:

Garter snakes don't just hit you once and pull back, either - those little boogers go ape on you :biglol:

Tons of deer on the courses I play....trust me from experience, you don't want to get in the way of a momma and her baby. You'll need more than a 3 wood to protect you.

Had a similar problem with some crowes on a course one time. The bastaads kept going into my cart and getting my supplies. Stole an unopened "big Texas" cinnamon roll that I managed to get back from them and then on about the 7th, one of them flew off with the rest of a pack of Lance "nabs" that I had only eaten a couple of.

I've seen a black bear the last few summers on the course at our cabin. I'll get a picture of the bastard this year I hope, he/she's always been too quick for me.

I get chills thinking about that, Eracer. I don't do spiders very well. Brown recluse (look it up) attacked me several years ago. I put on a hat, which the spider obviously took offense to. He jumped from the cupboard at my face, but my superhuman reflexes allowed me to snatch him and quickly rub my hands together. I really really hate spiders. :(
