Prednisone isn't a pain pill per se; it's an anti-inflamatory glucocorticoid. It works by shrinking the inflamed tissue, in your case it would shrink the swollen cartilage that is pressing on the nerve. Trust me, it works. Or just suffer and be crotchety.
