it seems most of the big name drivers/fw woods have a regular model and a "TP" model. whats the difference? is there something about the TP version that is better or makes it longer or what? (sorry if this has been dealt with before, i have trouble operating the search mechanism).

Generally speaking TP or Tour models are setup square or open at address. Most standard clubs are setup a couple degrees closed to accommodate most weekend hacks.

'tp' models are in no way superior to standard clubs. But they do have characteristics that better players generally prefer. Open faces, different center of mass, etc. They also usually come with a better quality shaft with a stiffer tip. Most of the upcharge you see for tp is probably because of the shaft.

Different size hosel, also. .350 in standard, .335 in TP in the woods.

Bingo. There are other differnces that have already been mentioned (face angle, hosel size, etc.) but the biggest difference is in the shaft most of the time. TP clubs also tend to be less forgiving in the average hackers hands and are easier to work the ball in more experience hands.
