If You Suck...

Being a good golfer has nothing to do with golf in it's own right.

Knowing the rules and understanding the etiquette is. Period.

End of story.

If it was the end of story, why is there an R35 on there?

Etiquette is important in the forum too, jackass.

Nothin' says classy like callin' someone a jackass!

Rock is totally right though. Fixing your divots, pace of play, and decency to the players/course is devoid of ability.

I play golf. I play decent golf. Sometimes, I suck. Often I suck, actually.

But, I still respect those around me.

I don't chew sunflower seeds on the course.

I don't take 35 minutes to line up a 4 foot putt, even if we're playing for money.

I don't bring 8 clubs to the green and leave 4 of them on the edge when I leave.

I don't pretend to think I can fly the 295 yard carry of a dogleg when I average 285 off the tee.

I don't hit my driver when I have no business doing so. Play your 3 wood. Being 40 yards shorter in the fairway keeps pace alot longer than 16 times in the bush. The driving range you passed on the way in is there for a reason.

I don't get my beers from the cart girl until after I've hit. I can't stress this enough.

I'm a decent golfer. But, i consider myself well versed in etiquette moreso than in being tight with the rules for people that I play with. Sure, we take gimme's (I don't), but I don't get bent out of shape when a guy picks up for a triple with 3 feet to go when he started 8 feet away. I'm more happy to get out there and play the game, have some fun, and get home in a reasonable amount of time. Not fast, but definitely at a pace. Sure, there are times when things get backed up, but make up for it by playing smart and keeping in mind that there are more people on the course than just your 4 some.

It's pretty damn easy. Those that don't do it, I have a hard time figuring that they must have some sort of brain damage.

The Rock doctrine has been established. Now spread it. (Shaking fist) SPREAD IT!!!!!

Typically, the play-through shot is the ugliest one in golf.

Played thru today & I rocked my drive! 395 yd doglegged left par 4 that you can't cut across because on the left is massive trees & once it opens up it's swamp. Guy & his son told me to go ahead & I nailed the drive dead solid, just the tiniest bit of fade & it carried the corner & dropped dead center in the fairway. The guy actually congratulated me & said it was the best drive he had seen all day, but then he also told me I would have to seal the deal & sink a 3' putt or the driving was all for show. 242 yd drive made me pretty happy since that's about what I have been getting lately, but to do it on a play-thru is fun.

2 guys in front of me that I was outdriving on every hole, even when I was hitting 220 yd stinkers thought they were long bombers too. Get to the 18th which from the whites is 276 yds but your drive has to cross a road & it's pretty damn narrow, the entire course is heavily wooded & most of the fairways are needle thin. Anyways they were waiting for the 3some on the green to finish before hitting their drives. The dad even told his 18yr old son that the green was easily drivable, yea right, not for either of them it's not. The kid put one in the trees & his next one was in the fairway right at 200 yds. The old man put 2 in the trees. I wasn't going to play hero & use driver since I have no shot at making it anyways. Pulled out my 4w & hit it 198 yds up the middle, pitched it on the green for GIR.

What is with folks thinking they can drive the ball further than they ever have, eveyr single time they get the driver in their hand?

Okay, here's an etiquette question.

We'll use hole 7 at a local track. You have to hit about 280 to clear some junk. If you do, you're left with a really nice and easy chip onto an elevated green. The alternative is lay up to about 220-230 and hit your approach from there. Is it taboo to wait? This hole does get backed up on from time to time, given the layout. I almost always go for it, unless I think that the wait might get into my head, and I'll hit a bad drive. I know I can clear it though, I've even driven the green a couple of times.

Not quite sure what the question is, if you are capable of driving the green & have done so in the past, then you wait until the green is cleared & if the hole backs up, so be it.

I myself would have to lay up since there is no way in hell I would clear 280 & I suspect most folks would be in my situation. So you reach for the green & even if you don't make it, as you mentioned it's just a short chip & you are on. Meanwhile the other folks can tee off & most likely layup.

Not really sure what the question is either. I play within my ability and capability and how I wish to manage the course. If that means waiting for the green or even fairway to clear, then so be it, as long as I am aware of my ability and capability.

So this wouldn't mean waiting for the green to clear when I am 280 yards out after hitting a good tee shot 230 yards. Although if you were to reverse those, then by all means why not wait for the green to clear? It is not poor etiquette to not change your strategy for a poor course design. Let the course deal with that issue.

edit 1 - I guess there may be an exception to what I said after having thought about it, if you hit the ball well and a long way and are having to wait for greens to clear simply because you are playing off the forward tees, then that may be another issue. Our old home course was very, very short. Knowing such, we played off the back tees otherwise many of the par 4's and all of the par 5's were reachable. Again though, we knew our limitations and knew that by playing off the tips we would be well within our ability yet would not have to wait for par 4's to clear.

Well, I generally feel guilty when it gets backed up. Just wondering what you guys would think if someone was in front of you doing that? Especially if its getting blocked up.

Really what can you do about it? If the guy is playing up to his abilities it's a non issue, if he waits but can't even hit the damn ball 200 yds I suppose you could attempt to talk to him although that doesn't always work out so well. On most public courses even if you call the pro-shop they won't do anything. If the course has marshals & they are semi aggressive, they might be able to accomplish something.

Or you could attack him with an 8 iron?:hunter:

If you have the ability, I have zero problem waiting. My problem is when you see someone on the tee waiting who you absolutely KNOW does not have a chance at making that shot. I have heard that poppin your collar can add an extra 20 to your tee ball, so hey anything is possible.

I'll wait.. Even if they can't make it, atleast let them try..

Tee'n up the 4th ball and keep trying it, I'll get pissed off.

Trying twice is fine.. Hey, if they have enough confidence and no shame in playing like that infront of a group of people.. Go on ahead.

I won't clear the 280, so I'd grab my 3i and lay it up.

Which seems to be the problem.
