Changing Golf Grips

Thanks a lot for the info, I just heard about those little rubber blocks, do you know where to get them? Somebody also told me about a special knife to get the old tape off the shaft, somebody heard about that?

I got mine from Golfworks -- SHAFT VISE CLAMP

They have fancier ones and all kinds of other gizmos. I just use a box cutter and my fingers to get the old grip and tape off the shaft, being very careful not to scratch the shaft when doing so.

the Vice is KEY! Also, WD-40 is the best to get everything wet and lubricated. Slides right on. By morning the grip, shaft and tape are bone dry and ready to play. I'd assume WD-40 is much less expensive than Zippo lighter fluid. Dont' forget to scrape off the old tape. Good luck!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ADVICE FROM???

WD-40 is a silicone lubricant..it does not evaporate like a solvent......good gawd, NEVER use a silicone based liquid for grips!

This is just the video i found first. I don't use any lube, or tape...i just blow the grip onto the steel shaft....have't done graphite yet...so idk if it would hold but i assume it would hold fine just grip on graphite

Brandon, note where he puts his left hand, he is putting just barely enough pressure on the grip to get it to slide down, not pressing it to the shaft.

This video is not accurate....I am sure that grip he removed was already internally lubed......to truly blow off a grip, a protector needs to be wrapped around it to prevent bubbling and exploding....he DID put the grip on correctly, but in real life, that is not how a grip is removed unless it was already "pre-seperated).

I agree....that grip was lubed and ready to come off easily. It was just the first video i could find, its not the best thats for sure.

You definitely need a vice. I've done it many times with lighter fluid and a box cutter. The plastic piece to hold it works really well but not completely neccesary. I've used a shop towel a few times and as long as the grip isn't being a pain, not much slippage to speak of.

Do not try to remove a grip with air that has not been put on in the same fashion! Cut the current off and remove all the tape. The new grips being installed will go right on the bare shaft. If it needs to be wrapped, don't use double sided tape. The are two huge advantages to using air. First one is that you do not have to cut grips off to remove them. Very useful when testing grips out. Second, you can literally bag them and play two seconds after you install them. Usually you have to wait a few hours after doing it the traditional way.

Is it 1985 still?
Solvent, sticky tape, big mess. Yuck.
Get a compressor, a roll of masking tape, and blow them on. Whole set done in 15 minutes including old grip removal, no mess and ready to hit.

Hi,

here what happened last night:

got me a vice, clamped it to my desk in my bedroom, my girlfriend wasn't too happy, but we live in only 65 sqm, so I had to put it somewhere...

Got rid of the old grip easily, also of the old tape, scratched it off and used taperemover solution to get off the remaining sticky bits. Put on a first layer of tape and then a second layer on top of the first (the second layer did not really stick very well any longer). Anyway, put on the solvent and then finally on with the winn grip, here the result........

unfortunately :mad::mad::mad:

not enough solvent poured on the tape, didnt wait long enough before sliding the grip on (1 minute to all solvent to work on tape), most likely didnt pour any solvent into the grip before install either. If done right it will slide on with so little effort it isnt even funny.

You could MAYBE pull it off free handed with some grips, but that Winn is not one of them. They can be VERY hard to put on. Different solvents and tapes act differently with them, but most of them grab the poop out of the inside of a winn grip. Gonna take a seriously strong push more than likely. The only combo I've found that works well with them is the tape from Golfsmith and solvent from GolfWorks -- every other combo of tape and juice I've used just didn't work well at all...

That's what I was talking about. You need to use a lot of solvent, a lot of waiting, and sometimes the combo still isn't going to work out. If you have one of the lucky combos of tape and solvent the things slide on easier than any other grip you'll try. The opposite and you'll end up with one partially stuck on, like you just did.

I've heard that the air pressure doesn't work with the multi-compound grips like Decade etc.

I was taught (Golfsmith video?) to fill the grip up with the solvent and then pour it on the tape (bucket or something under grip to catch it). Heavy duty vise with rubber pads so as not to booger up the shaft. I can't imagine re-gripping without a solid vise.

OKEJ, THIS IS A LITTLE EMBARRASING, BUT I CANNOT NOT TELL YOU:

I showed it to a friend of mine, who changes his grips frequently and he told me that I forgot to pull off the plastic film of one side of the tape..................
