what did you shoot today?

This is why I've declined surgery on my degenerative disc all this time.

When I herniated my disc the first time they wanted to operate immediately. I said no way and got a second opinion. Went to Dartmouth (top hospital in the area) and saw one of the leading spine guys in the country (didn’t know that at the time). He said I wasn’t a great candidate for surgery since the pain wasn’t to bad and it was mostly nerve issues.

I’m hoping this doesn’t go the route of surgery.

What did you do, if anything, to help it and get better?

Your pain is real. I had it too. I frequently crawled into a waiting room. I thought I was headed for surgery.

BUT as a last ditch I had a procedure under CT scan where a radiologist injected a combination of local anaesthetic and cortisone into the disc area. After 3 days I could feel slight relief. So my medicos put me in touch with an excellent Physiotherapist who specialises in backs. Long story short, my back got better and I’ve had no further impingement in the five years since.

Things I’ve learned since:

- Many people have a prolapsed disc but don’t realise due to no pain.
- Most prolapsed disc issues resolve without surgery.
- Backs like movement and exercise.

Glad to hear it’s gotten better!

I’ve noticed that the more I move the better it feels...even at its worst I forced myself to move around even if it was just to walk 20ft down the hall and back to the recliner or floor. At one point on a day that I didn’t go to work, I set a timer for every 20 minutes. I’d get up and move around for 5 minutes-well that was the goal. Sometimes I hit the goal, others I had to sit back down after 2. I’ve kept that routine of regular movement, however little, for the last 2 weeks. Hoping for the best!

We had a big strokeplay qualifying on Saturday, the 32 best nett scores to get to the matchplay bracket. I have won this thing twice and was a beaten finalist before, so I really look forward to it every year. Sadly my game didn't turn up. I had three meltdowns leading to an 84. Two of the meltdowns involved bunkers and the other was a lost ball, 8 paces from the pin. I pull my second shot on 11 just left of the pin into heavy rough. We hunted for 3 mins and I had to declare a lost ball. Ended up with a triple. Afterwards, I walked about 5 yards further on and spotted my ball. One of those days I guess. And I finished with 2 birds on the last three holes!! It's a maddening game.

See if you can get a prescription for indocin or celebrex. Both reduce the inflamation in your spine. It was like a miracle for me when I went on them.

I played last night with IG Jnr and his pals. It was the IGs v. the Young Guns. We played an interesting variant of matchplay using Texas scramble. So each pair both hit our drives and picked the best one. Then we both hit from that spot, again picking the best result. We both putt from the same spot. It means you are going to have a lot of birdie efforts. It's good fun and it speeds the game up.

We played the first nine holes and were -2 and two down. The young guns were pouring in the putts from everywhere and we couldn't catch a break.

But we then went bird, par, par, par, bird, bird, par, bird, bird to be -5 on the back nine and we smoked them winning three and one. A very cool -7 gross total. And a whole bag of fun!
