Wow sorry I started this thread :)

Have you noticed the only two people really against this hole thing are from Canada and England??

I don't think anyone who is not a citizen of the U.S.A. should be criticizing the rights and freedoms afforded to us by our government. It is frankly not your concern to tell us which rights we should be allowed and which ones shouldn't because it's illegal in the "rest of the world", i.e. Canada and Europe.

I could go on forever but I don't want to get kicked out of here for talking about politics.

I actually took it in the face. The force was enough to knock me on my can but it was a cold North Dakota winter day and I had enough clothing that the only shot that actually penetrated was my face. Not enough to really do any damage. My father tried to pop them out like a zit but in so doing I nearly passed out so we headed for home.
Anyway - we are careful, I've shot guns my entire life - I am here to say that accidents can and WILL happen.

Wow! Mine was similar...I felt a spray of pellets all over the left side of my body...none penetrated the clothing. Then, I felt my face burning and brought my hand up to it. Looked down on my hand and there is blood dripping on my hand.

I had about three pellets in my face...one about an inch below my eye. After we got back to the hotel, I got in the bathroom and kept on pinching on it like a zit- thinking it will pop out but it never would. Tried a needle...no good.

Finally I had to go to a doc. She looked at it and in 30 seconds said, "You've been shot haven't you?" Yup...

She had it out in about a minute. Glad I was wearing safety glasses that day...

Here here....somehow people think that we are all carrying around guns having shootouts all the time. I know tons of people with guns and not a single one has ever used it in a defensive manner.

They simply want to be prepared should the unlikely need arise....I really liked DaveE's post about Texas, ten years after passing their new law. Statistically, they have a large enough amount of data to draw valid conclusions from their study and they are pretty clear. Gun owners (with no criminal records) are More law abiding than the public at large.

Not surprised to hear this....

This is a small world. I too felt all over my face and noticed blood on my gloves and then it hit me that I had been shot. It was about that time that I felt the burn rush over my face. I had one go in just under my eyebrow, narrowly escaping my eye. That scared me more than anything. I shoot with glasses now as well - wife's orders!

My.02 on the original question:

9mm is not a very potent defense round. There is a reason for the .40 S&W. It nicely bridges the gap between a 9 and a 10mm.

Personally, .45 ACP is my favorite in a semi.

What's it cost? Very ambiguous question. A box stock Sig costs more than a box stock Ruger.

Decide on a caliber that suits your needs, establish a budget and see what your options are.

The results of that law were very different than what most people thought. Crime went down and the people who got the license to carry a conceiled weapon are close to 8 times less likely to arrested for a violent crime.
Good point, I am guessing that most of the criminals are not thinking about whether or not they can produce a hunters safety certificate when they are caught committing a violent crime, in the same sense that most car jackers are not concerned about the effect the offense will have on their license. Education in undervalued in this society. People need to realize that education in any event is important in learning not to be a dumba$$.

I do agree that people that do not have the time to become educated on the aspects of using and carrying a firearm should not carry or use one, in the same sense that I will not hold the police responsible for allowing an unlicensed driver on the road when they were unaware they were on the road until they ran an innocent bystander over because they couldn't reach the brake pedal. People need to be held responsible for their actions, if they are not old enough, the parents should be held responsible because they chose not to use birth control when they do not have time to educate their kids.

This is exactly my point. If you limit the opportunities, it's fairly safe to say that the incidents will decrease.

I understand that illegal firearms are a problem, and there's not much the average joe can do. But the one thing you can do is limit the opportunity of theft, incidents or the like.
Again, I will revert to the Automobile analogy until someone give me a valid reason not to do so. How many people are injured in automobiles every day? Should we just take away that freedom to save lives, or should we better educate the people behind the wheel/trigger. If they are unwilling to take the time for the required education, they are undeserving to participate. Although just because you limit the freedom does not mean people will not partake in the action. How many people do you think are on the road after losing their license for not following the rules? Should we just revoke that right from everyone, even if they follow the rules, educate themselves and practice safely, just because automobiles are known to cause unnecessary deaths in our society?

Perhaps we should also pass laws to Spay and Neuter children if we don't have the time to teach them to practice safely? After all, you can't hold the child responsible, and God forbid we would hold the parents responsible. Isn't that the responsibility of the educational system, they were supposed to learn that in school.

Hiter's Germany, Stalin's USSR, Imperal Japan all banned citizens form owning weapons.
Sand Francisco, Canda, & England bands handguns (correct?) so over there only felons own handguns and a citizen is made into a criminal if he or she has one at her home.
In Florida and Texas there're liberal CCW permit laws.
Guess what area suffers from less personal crimes of violence (including rape)?
What we need are more uses of CCW perimts with liability insurances like we have for driving cars, so that responsible folks can be trained, certified, and be held financialblly liable and viable with isurances and bonding.
Police can only react, they can not proactively protect anyone: think about it. matter of fact, often the police needs to wait around and call their own police, SWAT, to stop some felonies in progress.
There will alway some of the masses that can't control themselves nor their dangerous tools (automobiles, drugs, firearms, etc), but that doesn't mean we should flatly deny these rights or priviledges to reponsible and able citizens.
Self-defense is a human right and a duty. Not defending yourself is a kind of an appeasement to evil.

Near Head-On Collision

you never know when your time is up.

Yep I almost thought my time was up when I almost had a head on collision with the car coming in the opposite direction after I lost control of the car after being hit! sheeesh, that was a near miss! I saw my life flash by in front of me!

FACT: While handguns account for only one-third of all firearms owned in the United States, they account for more than two-thirds of all firearm-related deaths each year. A gun in the home is 4 times more likely to be involved in an unintentional shooting, 7 times more likely to be used to commit a criminal assault or homicide, and 11 times more likely to be used to attempt or commit suicide than to be used in self-defense.

FACT: A gun in the home increases the risk of homicide of a household member by 3 times and the risk of suicide by 5 times compared to homes where no gun is present.

FACT: Comparison of U.S. gun homicides to other industrialized countries:
In 1998 (the most recent year for which this data has been compiled), handguns murdered:

373 people in Germany
151 people in Canada
57 people in Australia
19 people in Japan
54 people in England and Wales, and
11,789 people in the United States

FACT: Among 26 industrialized nations, 86% of gun deaths among children under age 15 occurred in the United States.

FACT: Taxpayers pay more than 85% of the medical cost for treatment of handgun-related injuries.

FACT: While handguns account for only one-third of all firearms owned in the United States, they account for more than two-thirds of all firearm-related deaths each year. A gun kept in the home is 22 times more likely to be used in a homicide, suicide or unintentional shooting than to be used in self-defense.

FACT: In a ten year span, 1988 to 1997, 633 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed by firearms in America. A handgun was the murder weapon in 78% (492 victims) of the fatal incidents. Over the same period of time, rifles killed 106 officers and shotguns killed 35 officers. A total of 253 law enforcement officers were slain while equipped with body armor.

FACT: From 1977 to 1996, the U.S. firearm industry produced 85,644,715 firearms, 39,024,786 handguns, 26,651,062 rifles and 19,969,867 shotguns in the United States.

FACT: As of 1994, 44 million Americans owned more than 192 million firearms, 65 million of which were handguns. Although there were enough guns to have provided every U.S. adult with one, only 25% of adults owned firearms. Seventy-four percent (74%) of gun owners possessed two or more firearms.

FACT: Every two years more Americans die from firearm injuries than the total number of American soldiers killed during the 8-year Vietnam War. In 2003, the total number of people killed by guns in the United States was 30,136.

A recent Emory University study shows that 32% of unintended shootings in the U.S. are caused by deficiencies in gun design.

A nationwide survey about teenagers attitudes toward guns, conducted in 2003, found that:

39% Number of teens who said they know someone who has been shot
37% of teenagers could get a handgun "if I really wanted to"
27% know of a handgun kept in their house, apartment or car
59% do not believe that "video games can make teenagers violent"
56% do not want armed security guards patrolling their schools
90% do not believe that teachers and principals should be able to "bring handguns to school to protect students"

Everyday in the United States, 8 young Americans ages 19 and under are killed in gun homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings.
For every child killed by a gun, four more are wounded.

FACT: More than 3,500 students were expelled in 1998-99 for bringing guns to school. Of these, 43% were in elementary or junior high school. This means that, in a 40-week school year, an average of 88 children per week nationwide are expelled for bringing a gun in school. And these figures include only the children who get caught.

I'd go on, but i'd probably throw up....

Please link us too your facts.
A recent study showed that 50% of all studies are wrong. I hope that 50% are wrong!

Thank you 2nd amendment!!!

The only thing that I know about guns is the one Clint Eastwood used to carry around with him, you know the 45 magnum and when he says “You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?” :)

Well, I just wanted to join in the conversation!
